The documentary drama Partisan Priest tells the life story of Jože Lampret, a controversial personality of Slovenian pre- and post-war history. He was a priest who joined the Partisans in the Second World War and was eventually excommunicated from the Catholic Church. The life of Jože Lampret was marked by significant historical events, but also the very personal and tragic drama of his life as a relentless fighter for justice and equality, best summarised in his last will. Among other things, he wrote: »I dedicated my whole life to building God’s kingdom on Earth and following the Evangelical doctrine about social justice and humanitarian socialism, both at home and abroad – and I am deeply disappointed in both Internationals, i.e., political Christianity and international socialism. – Not one of them is being fulfilled fairly or will ever truly be fulfilled.« Lampret’s wholesome life, led true to his ideals, takes us on a gripping, but also touching journey through 20th century history, full of personal, social and political events; events that had a significant impact on both Lampret’s personal life and the European geographical area in general. His life path was frowned upon by his contemporaries and still raises many an eyebrow today. Many also wrote about him, both his opponents and his fellow freedom fighters, each time using the parts of Lampret’s life that were most suited to help with their interpretation of the truth. After the Second World War, and especially towards the end of his life, he became increasingly reclusive and felt misunderstood both by the Catholic Church and the official authorities. This life drama unites many incompatible concepts of Marxism and Evangelicalism and is based upon Lampret’s personal diary entries and notes, which he attempted to destroy before his death, just like he attempted to destroy his life.
